Calleja Smiley is originally from Michigan, and graduated high school from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as a ballet major. She received a BFA in dance from Alonzo King LINES Ballet/Dominican University of California, where she performed works by Margaret Jenkins, Sidra Bell, Arturo Fernandez, and Maurya Kerr. While living in San Francisco, Calleja had the pleasure of working with choreographers Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton and performed in Garrett + Moulton Productions’ Speak Angels. In NYC, her performance opportunities have included site-specific dance films by Morgan Refakis and Nancy Nowacek, works by Sarah Foster, and Cunningham repertoire through the Merce Cunningham Trust. Calleja is currently a company member with Shauna Sorensen and Dancers and is also a Gibney Dance Community Actionist, where she performs and facilitates conversations about healthy relationships in school assemblies across NYC. Additionally, she creates her own work that explores intersections between movement and the written/spoken word. Calleja’s solo performance piece and accompanying theological essay, Budding Bodies, was presented by the Society of Vineyard Scholars at their 2018 conference.  Calleja is also a Stott Pilates® Certified Instructor and Post-Rehabilitation Specialist, and enjoys teaching at several studios throughout NYC. She is very honored to belong to the Awakening Movement team.
